The 2014 C. elegans “Topics” Meeting, covering Aging, Metabolism, Pathogenesis, Stress, and Small RNAs, will be held July 10-13, 2014 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Abstracts are due today (May 5th)! Abstracts can be submitted at this site.
WormBase and the "Heartbleed" security issue
Recently, a serious security gap was identified in the software that provides the “secure” component of many websites. Called “Heartbleed“, this issue could possibly affect upwards of 2/3 of websites. Exploits of this issue leave no trace making it particularly vicious.
The WormBase website was also affected.
We have applied recommended security patches and are no longer vulnerable to this issue. We strongly encourage all registered users of WormBase to change their passwords.
Read more about Heartbleed on the NY Times or the original report documenting the issue.
WormMine service disruption, 24 February 2014
WormMine will be unavailable on Monday, February 24 due to a storage upgrade. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Changes at WormBase
WormBase thanks Jonathan Hodgkin for years of superb community service handling genetic nomenclature. Tim Schedl will now serve as the genetic nomenclature coordinator and arbiter.
John Spieth, Tamberlyn Bieri and Phil Ozersky at the Washington University at St. Louis have retired from WormBase as of July 31. We thank them for more than a decade of tireless curation of C. elegans and other nematode sequence and gene models.
Announcing GENIE: Group of Elegans New Investigators in Europe
We are establishing a European support network for junior C. elegans group leaders. GENIE aims to: (1) promote knowledge and people exchange across European young worm groups; (2) enhance Europe-wide collaborations and short-term mobility; (3) raise the profile and exposure of young European worm groups. To realise these aims we will create a network website and mailing list, organise an annual meeting and make a variety of small travel, exchange and seminar grants available.
BUT first we need to hear from YOU (to get feedback/ideas on what you would like to see on the final website and to coordinate funding applications).
If you are a junior nematode group leader in Europe please visit our temporary signup page at www.worm-genie.eu to leave your details and you will hear from us in the very near future.
Thanks!
GENIE Coordinators: Sophie Jarriault (sophie@igbmc.fr), Peter Meister (peter.meister@izb.unibe.ch) and Richard Poole (r.poole@ucl.ac.uk)
